Sports Broadcaster
Network 10, ABC Radio; Former Olympic Hockey Player, World Cup Silver Medallist and Dual Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist
An Olympic hockey player, World Cup silver medallist and dual Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Ashleigh Nelson represented Australia 205 times scoring 69 goals, before happily retiring after her second ACL reconstruction. Whilst initially working as an Occupational Therapist in Neurology, Ashleigh’s drive to provide better coverage for women’s sport saw her transition into sports journalism and broadcasting. Ashleigh now works as a sports broadcaster in television with Network 10 and ABC radio, continuously striving to provide equal coverage to both genders.
Ashleigh remains highly involved in hockey as an Assistant Coach with WA women’s team, The Perth Thundersticks, and like most retired athletes her stories about how she played keep getting bigger and better the longer she’s retired. Hailing from a small country town called Wagin, Ashleigh is a strong advocate for sporting pathways in regional areas.
